Recently the UL STP (Standards Technical Panel) 1479 reviewed the UL 2079 test standard for construction joints specifically in regard to joint systems in which the firestop material when installed is not flush with the outer surface of the wall assembly utilizing a gasket type firestop rather than a traditional sealant or mineral wool and spray solution. This situation occurs mainly in head of wall conditions involving gypsum wall assemblies.

Sometimes the need to repair a firestop is unavoidable. Inadvertent jobsite
mishaps are perhaps the most common culprit that most people would think of as a potential source of damage to installed firestops. However, there is often a need to conduct destructive sampling tests of firestop materials to ensure compliance with the appropriate tested system. The thickness of the firestop material in this small specimen, which was obtained from destructive testing, is compared to a benchmark value to confirm the firestop has been properly installed. Both accidents and deliberate destructive testing can create a firestop system that needs to be repaired. Do we have to start from scratch and replace the entire existing firestop or is there an easier solution?

Firestopping 101 for Floor Drains

Floor, shower and tub drains seem like fairly straightforward building features that don’t warrant a great deal of attention. Unfortunately, these types of drains can result in firestopping headaches for both manufacturers and installers. The test procedures can often be more rigorous relative to a regular through-penetration and the International Building Code (IBC) requires equal F and T Ratings since the drains are penetrants in a floor assembly.

For those of us who deal with firestopping every day, we sometimes take for granted that everyone intuitively understands this business we call firestopping. The vernacular can certainly vary at times, and that can add to the confusion. There are even colloquial ways that people use to refer to firestopping, such as the person I once encountered who called firestop caulk another term that might better be defined as the waste matter of primates. New Fuel Pipe Protection with E-Wrap, Systems FP-3 and FP-4 – Two new systems are available for the protection of fuel oil pipe using E-Wrap Endothermic Wrap. FP-3 is for a single pipe and FP-4 covers double containment piping applications. The testing to promulgate FP-3 and FP-4 was conducted in accordance with UL 1489 “Standard for Fire Tests of Fire Resistant Pipe Protection Systems Carrying Combustible Liquids”. A through penetration firestop system for steel and iron pipes protected with E-Wrap passing through 2 Hr rated concrete walls and floors is addressed with C-AJ-5437.
