Hilti - CP 653 BA Speed Sleeve

Description: 

Hilti Speed Sleeve consists of a light gauge steel housing with fabric inner lining, incorporating plastic ends caps and an intumescent strip, with escutcheon plates. The speed sleeve is "activated" by twisting the plastic end caps shut after cable work has been completed. This activation is required to provide L Rating. If Speed Sleeves are left "open" then the device will continue to provide F Ratings but will no longer provide L Ratings.

  • Functional and compliant when properly installed
  • Twist-to-close mechanism – for easier and remote re-penetration while protecting cables
  • Straightforward inspection – you can see if the sleeve is closed without having to check behind a covering fringe above the ceiling
  • Superior smoke tightness and airflow control thanks to its twisting mechanism
  • Smoke gaskets eliminate need for sealant or putty

Applications (From Hilti Website):

  • Firestopping cable penetrations for single and bundled cables
  • Suitable for small to medium-sized circular openings in walls, ceilings and floors
  • For use on concrete, masonry and drywall

​​​​​​​Positioning:

  • Targeting electrical contractors as a cheaper alternative to EZ-Path.
  • Typically, pitched as a pathway no different than EZ-Path but at lower cost to contractors who will not live with the installation long term. These contractors don't see the ROI of EZ-Path and view SpeedSleeve as a way to cut cost at no downside to them.

Advantages:

  • Cost - Speed Sleeve is sold direct to contractors at a significant cost savings compared to EZ-Path
  • L-Ratings - If twisted closed and installed with sealant seals between the device and assembly the Speed Sleeve boasts an achievable L-Rating of Less Than 1 CFM

Disadvantages

  • Cheap product - made from thin metals and plastics. Prone to breakage resulting in the inability to twist closed the device. Not up to the rigors of the job site.
  • Manual activation - Device can be left "open" accidentally or due to job site conditions/damage. When left open the device has no achievable L-Rating. Many barriers require L-ratings and markets are beginning to enforce them more vigorously.
  • Low Density - Due to the round design of the outer housing, the speed sleeve requires a significant amount of wall/floor space when multiple devices are needed. Space is often constrained above the ceiling grid or in the tight confines of a telecommunications room making increased capacity at rated barriers difficult or impossible to achieve.
  • Capacity - The speed sleeve can accommodate approximately 75% the cable capacity of the equivalent EZ-Path (4" Speed Sleeve to Series 44+ Device). This results in more devices being needed when compared to the capacity of the Series 44+.
  • No Casting/Grouting in place - None of the firestop systems released allow for casting/grouting in place, a common practice that many contractors use when converting previously cored openings over to EZ-Path
  • No Caulking in place - No listings exist that allow for the device to be caulked in place using firestop sealant. A practice that we have tested using SSS/LCI sealant with single device installs of the Series 22 and Series 33.
  • No Custom Colors - There is no option for custom coloring at this time. A practice that many customers of EZ-Path take advantage of to color code their pathway based on usage
  • No Extension Modules - Due to the design of the throat, there is no ability to offer extension modules to accommodate for thicker wall/floor assemblies.
  • No Radius Control Module - Due to the design of the throat, there is no ability to offer a Radius Control Accessory. Although not impacting fire performance, this design consideration is considered an advantage by low voltage contractors and designers
  • Sales Alignment - The Electrical and Communication's market are more accustomed to Sales Reps selling a package of products from different synergistic vendors and purchasing through distribution. Some larger manufacturers do have direct sales teams in the channel, such as rack/cabinet or pathway vendors, but these purchases still flow through Distribution. Hilti's direct sales model will make purchasing their products out of the typical flow of purchasing for these customers creating complications in sourcing material.
